Associate Minister & Rector of St. Mary's East Barnet
Rev. James Mustard

James was installed as Rector of East Barnet in April 2012.

Born in Bristol and raised in Scotland and the South of England, James read Music at Exeter University.  He then combined working as a teacher at The Abbey School Tewkesbury with a singing career both in this country and abroad, in particular as a soloist of the English consort Ex Cathedra and as a chorus member of the Belgian ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent.  In 2002, he commenced training for ordained ministry in the Church of England at Westcott House in Cambridge.  He read Theology at the University of Cambridge and went to Yale Divinity School and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music where he studied liturgy and ethics.

After ordination in Norwich in 2005, he served in the parish of St Peter Mancroft, Norwich, where he was also chaplain to the Theatre Royal and chaplain to the Sea Cadets.  In 2008, he moved to London to be Assistant Priest of St Peter’s Eaton Square, where he worked extensively with the local business community and the parish’s primary school.  During this time, he completed an M.A. in Systematic Theology at King’s College London.

Now in East Barnet, he is revelling in the joys of parish life and the privilege of worshipping with a lively congregation in an ancient church building in the midst of modern North London.  He is proud to be part of the East Barnet Anglican-Methodist Partnership and serves as a governor of St Mary’s C of E School, on the committee of the East Barnet Residents’ Association, and in the House of Clergy of the St Albans Diocesan Synod.

James still retains an interest in all things musical, from early church music to contemporary North American music.  He is also a keen supporter of the Church of England’s musical ministry and serves as a chaplain to the Royal Schools of Church Music.

Outside church and the concert hall, James is an enthusiastic cook, enjoys canoeing and is learning how to get to grips with a large Rectory garden!

Revd Dr Jenny King is also an Associate Minister of Barnet Brookside Methodist Church.
